EYE TEST
An eye test has 2 main components
> Checking your vision, how your external ocular muscles are working and if you have a significant spectacle prescription,
> Checking the ocular health of the front and inside your eyes.
If you feel you have no problems with your eyes or just need to update your spectacle prescription checking your ocular health is essential. With a majority of eye problems there is no pain. The Optometrist's job is to detect these problems and get early treatment before permanant damage is done. Its a bit like servicing your car every 10,000 miles! Your Optometrist will advice when to have your next "service" depending on what is seen at your examination.
THE INSTRUMENTS THAT WILL BE USED
SLIT LAMP. This checks the front surface of the eye and when used with a very strong lens gives us an indepth view of the retina.
NCT. This is a gentle puff of air that tells us your eye pressure.
FIELD SCREENER. This checks your central visual field.
RETINAL CAMERA. gives us a photographic record of the ocular health making test to test comparisons even more accurate.
OPTICAL COHERENCE TOMOGRAPHER. This is an advanced way of scanning your eyes for an even greater depth of information.

An eye examination should take around 30 minutes.
It is not painful!
Children can be tested from around 3 years old. Sooner if you have any concerns. They do not need to be able to read letters. There are lots of fun ways to assess their vision.
All children should be checked by the age of 4. This gives us time to detect and treat lazy eyes. Your child can have a lazy eye without having a squint or turn.
Sometimes eye drops are used. This is when only absolutely necessary. Yes they can sting but just for a short time.
